                                      IMPORTANT EARLY AMERICAN ARTIST!!!

David Johnson was a successful landscape painter of the Hudson River School. His fine draftsmanship & rich
colors portrayed picturesque scenes of upper N.Y. State and New England. He was born in NY City in 1827.
Although he spent most of his professional life there, his frequent journeys to the Hudson River Valley
(particularly the Fort Putman & West Point areas) & New England inspired some of his best landscapes. This
painting was professionally  cleaned & restored by Fodera Fine Art Conservation, Ltd. NY, NY in January 1991.
The restorer stated that a portion of the foreground appears to have been reworked by the artist. We believe
this panoramic view is on the Hudson River, just south of Fort Montgomery. This painting retains an original
gold leaf frame & is signed on the back of the frame, D. Johnson w/ the #5749 above. A very similar painting by
Johnson was sold at Sotheby's, NY 5/27/92, Lot#17A, titled "The Hudson River Fort Montgomery".
The owner we are selling this magnificent work of art for has not been able to locate the Conservation
Report, so it will not be included. This painting has been in the current owners collection for over 20
years. He purchased it from a prominent Physician's estate. If you have any question let us know, we will be
delighted to hear from you. Our photo's do not do this fabulous painting justice.
