Library & Art Gallery and Rose Book Shop (La) in 1933. He was also a member of the art
students League of Los Angeles, one of the cities earliest art schools. He received an
honorable mention in the Pasadena Museum of California Arts Jan. - April 2008 exhibition, A
Seed of Modernism: The Art Students League of Los Angeles. We spoke with the museum
about the exhibition and at the time they were unable to locate a painting by Herwig to
He is quoted from the "Independents" catalog for an exhibition held at the Palos Verdes Public
Library & Art Gallery Oct. 31st to Dec. 31, 1933 as saying: "The marked influence of the East
on our younger painters I believe is indicative of a new & greater expression in Art, blending
the best of the East with the knowledge of the West. I regard the Pacific Coast as the scene of
the new impetus." William von Herwig died in Los Angeles in 1947 at approx.46 years old.
This vivid work by Herwig depicts a man holding his "prize" rooster. Created in an unusual
manner (pastel on canvas) it has good detail and a wonderful blend of colors. Also, it's framed
under "non-glare glass" in an older frame that works very well with this skillful work of art. It
measures 34-1/2" H x 29-3/4" W without frame and 38" H x 33-1/2" W framed. It is
signed William Herwig '23 lower left (also signed Bill Herwig on the back, see photo's) and is in
EXCELLENT condition. The 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th & 14th pictures were taken outside in the
natural sun light and the very last photo shows it in the frame. The painting will be very well
packed and protected.
We believe this painting to be the artist own masterpiece, the quality of workmanship is
unsurpassed. Rarely is artwork by this artist available for sale. We obtained this delightful
painting from a local art collector who has had it in his collection for several years. This colorful
painting is sure to bring you years of pleasure.
This is a large and heavy (16 lbs.) painting if you have any questions pretaining to shipping
and insurance let me know.
