19th Century Carved Wood Coffer w/Secret Hidden Compartments
This is a very RARE, antique, 19th Century, Folk Art, Carved Wood Coffer with several
secret hidden compartments and a slide-lid embellished with a Hunting Dog. This well carved
desk/treasure mystery box can be opened by sliding the top (section with the dog) to the left
side revealing a hidden compartment with a slide lock inside opening the next hidden section
located below. The main section has a key lock (key included) and there are two more hidden
compartments below, concealed behind the moulding. The moulding slides up to reveal 2
hidden drawers with a spring in the rear to hold them tight in place. The relief and incised
hand carving is on all four sides and the top. The carving is excellent to say the least.
Unfortunately the artist of this magnificent piece did not sign the box. This delightful box
measure 12-3/4" wide x 8-1/2" high x 7-1/2" deep. It has the original hinges and is in excellent
condition with normal wear commensurate with age. The bottom has one natural age crack.
The moulding concealing to 2 bottom drawers fits tight and the entire box has a warm
uncleaned patina. Each of the hidden compartments have a black velour lining that could be
cleaned. The main compartment has the velour on the top, bottom and sides.
This is truly a magnificent one-of-a-kind box. Finding a box with hidden compartments is rare
to find in any condition.
